How to Dry Out Succulent Soil?

Garden soil can dry out quickly if sunlight, aeration, and drainage are provided and absorbent materials such as newspaper are used.

If this does not help, try replanting to improve drainage and add organic dry material such as sand or perlite. Watering should usually be done after the soil has dried.

Can waterlogged soil be repaired?

Waterlogged soil can be remedied by first improving drainage. Raising the soil, such as by creating a mound or raised bed, will facilitate drainage. If the plant is in a pot, try digging holes in the pot. If this does not improve the situation, repot the plant. Use a well-drained soil amendment such as sand or perlite.

Waterlogged or soggy soil can usually be remedied, but it is important to know when and how to make changes.

If the soil is well-drained, excess water will naturally drain through the soil and pot. It becomes problematic when the soil becomes waterlogged over time. This is usually due to poor drainage and constant overwatering.

Waterlogging in the soil can lead to a number of problems, including the growth of bacteria, mold, and other fungal spores. For example, it is common for the roots of over-watered plants to develop root rot due to trapped water.

When does the soil dry out?

Waterlogged soil usually dries out completely within 2-3 days. Some methods dry faster than others, such as using sun or wind. If the soil has not dried by then, it may be saturated with water and may need to be replanted or reinforced with sand or perlite.

Drying out usually takes 2-3 days, depending on the method used, such as moving the soil to a sunny location. As a rule, the soil should dry out completely within a week (if that is the goal).

However, plants affected by root rot or other diseases cannot be saved by the above methods alone. My kaffir lime tree was cured of root rot by repotting, but this may not be the case for other plants with waterlogging.

Can I dry the soil with a hairdryer?

A hairdryer can dry the soil as long as it is set to the lowest temperature. It is best to keep the dryer three feet above the soil, especially if plants are present. However, dryers are not the best or most effective way to dry wet soil. Consider using a small fan on a low setting.

A hairdryer can be just as effective as a fan in drying plant soil. However, if the airflow is too strong (or too hot), it can damage plants.

Therefore, use a lower temperature setting on the dryer.

On the other hand, a fan doesn’t create a very concentrated breeze, so it’s not necessary to keep it on. They are also more energy-efficient, as they generally require less energy than a hairdryer.

How long does it take for excessively wet soils to dry out?

Depending on the drying method, drying usually takes between 1 and 3 days. Drying methods include sunlight and wind, which have been found to be most effective in drying excessively wet soil.

How to dry out succulent soil?

Drying excessively wet soil is not difficult. It just requires a little attention and effort.

1. Stop watering and give the plant time

Allowing the soil to dry out completely between waterings is an effective way to avoid over-wetting the soil and the plants.

Simply avoid overwatering the soil temporarily.

This will allow the soil to evaporate the water and the plants to evaporate the water they already have.

2. Place the plant in a well-ventilated area

Don’t panic. Place the plant in a windy location. Wind plays an important role in promoting transpiration. The stronger the wind, the more water the plant will lose.

3. Place the plants in a low humidity location

When plants are moved to a low humidity zone, the stomata open, and more water is transported than normal.

Since humidity is directly related to the opening and closing of the stomata, it is a wise decision to place the plants in locations with low humidity and high temperatures to avoid waterlogging.

4. Make sure there are drainage holes in the bottom of the plant

Multiple drainage holes in the bottom of the pot can prevent overwatering.

This allows excess water to drain away more easily when watering the plant.

The drainage holes ensure that water does not accumulate at the bottom of the pot.

5. Remove any mulch that is on top of the soil

Mulch helps retain moisture in the soil. To help excessively watered soil dry quickly, remove mulch from the top of the soil.

Removing mulch increases the evaporation rate and helps unwanted water evaporate.

6. Drill holes in the sides of the pot

Drill holes in the sides of the pot: make sure the holes are not blocked by rocks or soil inside the pot.

These drainage holes not only allow water to drain out of the soil, but also improve aeration and root growth.

They are not as common as soil holes but have the same effect of drying out the soil faster.

7. Dry the soil with a hairdryer

Using a hairdryer directly on the soil can easily remove excess moisture.

However, there are a few things to keep in mind when doing so.

Pointing the hairdryer directly at the floor will only remove surface moisture and leave other parts of the floor damp.

To remove all the moisture, remove the soil from the pot and spread it out. In this way, the hot air removes much of the moisture from the soil.

In this case, consider adding dry soil or repotting right away with new soil.

It should also be noted that if the dryer’s hot air gets too hot, it can kill a large number of microorganisms in the soil. This makes the soil less nutritious for the plants.

What happens to plants and soil that are over-watered?

One of the main causes of plant death is overwatering. To find out if you are overwatering your plants, you can look for the following symptoms

Soft, swollen leaves

When water is applied unnecessarily to the roots, the plant’s ability to absorb water increases. So, the water supply and the water release are no longer equal.

The leaves are not able to evaporate the excess water. This excess water causes the leaf to swell, and the leaf may burst due to excessive pressure.

Dead cells appear in the form of blisters.

Root rot

If the roots remain submerged, the oxygen supply is reduced and the roots begin to rot.

Wilting

Signs of wilting are usually associated with watering. However, overwatering can also cause plants to wilt.

If the plant does not get enough oxygen, it suffocates and dies.

The color of the leaves changes

Excess water in the body of the plant is also responsible for the change in leaf color. If there is insufficient water supply, the leaves may turn yellow.

It can also cause the leaves to turn brown. The leaves look limp and droopy.

Leaf drop

Excess water on the leaves prevents them from standing upright. As a result, the leaves eventually fall off the plant. This includes both new and old leaves.

Poor growth

Excessive watering can also cause slow or sluggish plant growth. Overwatering can cause plants to lose vigor.

Overwatering can cause plants to grow, but not to grow taller.

Anaerobic environment

Overwatering provides plants with excess water and creates an anaerobic environment for plants.

When plants receive large amounts of water, they cannot exchange gases such as O2 (oxygen) and eventually die.

Disease

Excessive watering can also attract pests to houseplants.

How to use lime to dry the soil?

Lime and soil are mixed well and take about 24-48 hours to settle.

When it is ready, it is sprinkled on the excessively watered garden soil. After some time, the lime reacts with the moisture in the soil and generates heat.

This reaction drives the water vapor, which then evaporates as water vapor from the surface of the garden. All this happens within one to three hours.

How to add lime to the soil?

To add lime, the soft soil must be prepared. Adding lime directly to the soil can cause several problems. Therefore, it is advisable to take precautions.

Prepare the soil bed by digging the soil 20-30 cm deep with garden tools.

Spread the lime evenly and mix it into the soil to a depth of 5 cm until no grains of lime are visible.
